Ron Coderre opened the meeting at 8:31 a.m. with introductions

Presentation by New London Day Speaker, Ed Dombrowskis. The Eastern Regional Tourism District’s goal is to reinvent tourism in Connecticut. There is no statewide tourism budget. In the Quiet Corner, they are looking to enhance tourism. On July 29th, there is a joint meeting with The Last Green Valley. The website: Mystic.org represents our area as well. It costs $300 to have a page on the website, which can be partnered with many businesses.
4 p.m. July 29th at Celebrations in Pomfret, if anyone would like to attend a meeting on Tourism in NE CT.

Minutes: Danny Goyette made a motion to approve and accept the June 9, 2010 minutes as presented. Seconded by Karen, Motion carried.

Treasurers Report:

Theater Event: August 6th Need to sell tickets! Christina reported we have only sold 38 tickets, and it’s 3 weeks away. Pre-show reception included in the Congregational Church Parking Area including food and raffles.

Pumpkinfest: Karen reported Saturday 23rd is the date for the train and main events. Next meeting is Wed. July 21st at 11 a.m. at WINY. Crafters will be throughout the town instead of Rotary Park. Same events as last year plus possibility of pumpkin Olympics, scavenger hunt, and a flower show.

Auction: Monday, October 4th @ The Courthouse. Sports memorabilia and services will be offered. Ron will be looking for help.

Subcommittees:

PR and Marketing: Jerry reported the team has set up a subcommittee for the local businesses in the downtown area. They want to meet with Delpha about the façade program. The 1st Wed. of every month is the main marketing committee meeting at VSC. The map is still in the works.

Membership Update: We have 110 members and about 25-30 members have not renewed. New businesses needed. Membership drive in September is planned.

By-Laws: Still pending.

PBA Mixer: Summer – Smith Bros.Tire & Putnam Chrysler will try to put something on.

The Sochor Gallery at Arts & Framing (112 Main St.) will host an exhibition of Woodstock celebrity Caroll Spinney, six-time Emmy award winner for personifying Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch on Sesame Street. Spinney’s work will include original watercolor drawings and prints The Sochor Gallery is the only place in the world where you can purchase his originals!  You can meet the famous puppeteer and accomplished artist (and have him personalize a drawing Big Bird or Oscar the Grouch) between 1 and 3PM. In addition, Lyn Landry, from SunRun Garden in Thompson will feature her beautiful tie-dye scarves and hand woven articles.

Silver Circle Studio (75 Main St. Suite 3) will offer an exhibit/silent auction featuring “Me” by Jean-Paul Jacquet of Pomfret, plus work by various artists will be shown in Silver Circle’s retail space as well as “Art Alley,” an indoor passage between 85 Main, Bella’s and Silver Circle.  Brooklyn Elementary School’s “Masterpiece Art” contest winners will also be displayed in Art Alley. Local artist demonstrations include Arrik Kim with wood carving techniques from 1-4pm, Natalie Gillihan Scafidi creating ceramic jewelry molds at 1:30 pm and acrylic painter Susan Rosenstone Larrow with an artist talk at 3:00 pm. Face painting and craft activities for kids, as well as Silver Circle children’s student show, will be ongoing in the downstairs studio.

Sawmill Pottery (112 Main St. #14) owner Dot Burnworth will offer participatory wheel throwing demos at 2:00 pm.  Come to watch or jump in and give the wheel a whirl. She will also have free Paint-Your-Own Pottery time all day (just pay for materials & firing). Sawmill Pottery’s popular Sidewalk Chalk Competition will be held between 10AM-3PM with judging between 3-4PM. This is free to the public & fun for all ages: just sign up and get a number at Sawmill Pottery and use their chalk or bring your own.  Prizes will be awarded to the Best Adult, Best Teen, Best Under 12, and Best In Show.

GalleryByTheFalls (112 Main Street) GalleryByTheFalls’ owner Tim Oliver will give a mosaic demo using egg shells in the Atrium of the Montgomery Ward Building from 1-5 pm. In addition, the Saxman (Al Dziedzic) will perform from 1:00- 2:30 pm on the sidewalk in front of the Montgomery Ward Building, and from 3:00 – 5:00 pm visitors can enjoy acoustic music with Jay Dumas and Bill Peabody.

Gallery by the Falls, Sawmill Pottery, Silver Circle Studio and The Sochor Art Gallery in Arts & Framing are all located on Main Street in Downtown Putnam, CT, which is rapidly gaining recognition as a hub for arts & culture. Minutes: February 10, 2010 Delpha Very made a motion to accept. Roger Franklin seconded the motion. Motion carried.

Financial Report:

-Net income for PBA $2,151.00.

-83 members this year thus far.

-Ron shared that $305.00 was received from the latest mixer at Putnam Ford.

Subcommittees:

PR and Marketing

-Tony Chabot reported the tourism map should be ready in almost 2-3 weeks.

-Tony shared everyone should see our website with three updated videos. Tony is looking for submissions for a press release. Jerry Cohen suggested that we submit dates to the website as events are planned to attract people to our town.

Membership Drive Update- 83 memberships, applications are on the website.

Bylaws- Steve Adams is reviewing and adding Associate Memberships.

Power Solutions Group Presentation

Matt Fagan and David Coderre presented on power savings. The presentation included information on deregulation. CL&P no longer makes electricity they just supply it, which makes it more expensive. You can switch for a variable rate on a time limited contracts. It averages about one monthly bill savings per year.

REMINDER: Members can come to meetings early to socialize.

Correspondence- Country Kids sent a letter to Ron Coderre with their membership. Although they cannot attend meetings they want to support the PBA.

Mixer Recap- Over 100 attendees. Thank you to our local restaurants for the great food. Thank you to Rick Place and Danny Goyette for their hospitality.

Putnam Police Department and Pride Program

Romeo Blackmar thanked the PBA for joining forces with the Police Department for this program.  Rick Hayes will sign up businesses who are interested in signing up for the sticker program.  March 25^th for parents and students from 5-7 p.m. there will be an educational program.

Memorial Day Parade- Businesses who are interested should please enter a float or get involved. Barney Seney thanked members of the PBA for their support.

Earthfest Update- Christina Anderson reported the clean up is April 24^th with an Earthfest celebration after the clean up. They will meet at 10:00 a.m. at Rotary Park. The Town of Putnam will provide trucks for trash pick up. Looking for sponsors for Earthfest to help defray expenses. Mike Vassar asked all businesses to keep their areas clean and free from debris. Main Street Banner-The Executive Committee voted to partner with the Town Economic Development to purchase a banner to hang in downtown. It will read “Putnam is one of the best 15 Towns in New England.”

Theater Event August 6- Grease- 350 tickets at $4,000 to buy. Sam Crawford will coordinate selling tickets. Tickets will sell for $25.00. We can make $4,000 profit! Need 3-4 volunteers to coordinate food and other events for the evening. Call Ron to offer assistance.

Doug Cutler spoke on the water situation in Putnam. Doug shared the town is looking to provide adequate water. CT new regulation controls how much water can come from the Little River. We have wells, but they are in negotiations with CT Water to provide 800,000 gallons if needed. Over a ten year period it would cost one million dollars. Town Meeting Thursday 3/18/10 for a vote to begin this project. Conservation efforts are also underway.

Business Announcements

Visitors for downtown Putnam- Delpha shared the town is working with consultants to better the Town of Putnam. PBA members are encouraged to participate on March 22, 2010, April 13, 2010, May 18, 2010. (see flyer for more information)

The Safe and Friendly Community Decal Campaign kick-off went on without a hitch even though the weather did not want to cooperate. The Putnam Partnership Program which includes PRIDE, The Putnam Business Association and the Putnam Police Department began their campaign with their very first business to sign up, Cumberland Farms. The ceremonial placement of the first decal on the window at Cumberland Farms was placed by Chief Rick Hayes with remarks from Romeo Blackmar of Putnam PRIDE, and Ron Coderre of the Putnam Business Association.

Ron thanked the group for a great 2009 year and reviewed the years events and programs.  Ron thanked Christina Anderson again and mentioned the President’s Award she received in December.  Pat Savulis and Linda Lamoureux were given an appreciation Presidents Award for their work on behalf of the PBA.

PUTNAM — Shoppers and visitors to Putnam will notice something different when they come to town on the Friday evenings leading up to Christmas.  Through an effort by the Putnam Business Association shops, boutiques, antique stores and art galleries are offering extended shopping hours beginning Dec. 4 and continuing through Dec. 18.  All stores will be opened until 9 p.m. every Friday prior to Christmas.

According to Christina Anderson of Victoria Station Café, chairman of the Holiday Stroll, the PBA is encouraging businesses and dining establishments to decorate for the holiday season including lining the sidewalks in front of their businesses with luminarias that will be available through the business association.

“Our idea is to create a festive holiday air about the entire Putnam business community.  We want visitors and shoppers as well as residents to stroll through our shops and enjoy the ambience of Putnam.  The excitement that the Holiday Stroll has created is spreading to all parts of town,” said Anderson.

“Jolly Olde St. Nick” pulled the switch lighting the Putnam holiday decorations and signaling the official start of the Holiday Stroll in Putnam last week.

“Putnam is an exciting community.  It’s great to see the variety of activity that’s taking place.  We’re hoping to see these types of events continue and grow throughout the upcoming years,” said Ronald P. Coderre, president of the Putnam Business Association.

Anderson said while people are in Putnam for the Friday Holiday Stroll they will be entertained by choral groups singing songs of the season.  Simultaneously, The Theater of Northeast Connecticut at the Bradley Playhouse is offering “Broadway Live …Christmas” every weekend beginning Dec. 4 and concluding on Dec. 20.

Another theater venue located in Putnam, The Complex Performing Art Center, is also offering a Christmas show titled “Nuncracker.”  It begins on the weekend of Dec. 4 and continues through the Dec. 20.

As a special initiative through the Putnam Business Association, more than 40 local shops, boutiques, restaurants and other businesses are offering special 10 percent off coupons to anyone making a purchase of $25 or more.  The coupons will be available at participating businesses and are redeemable throughout the entire month of January.

“We want people to join the revolution and do business locally.  Putnam has so much to offer, not only during the holiday season but during every season of the year,” said Coderre.

The Putnam Business Association has been in existence for one year.  It has a membership of 121 businesses, restaurants and professionals.  The organization holds its meetings the second Wednesday of each month at 8:30 a.m. on the second floor of Victoria Station Café.  Anyone interested in learning about the organization is welcome to attend.

Meeting Minutes

December 9, 2009

Present: I didn’t get the attendance sheet.

Ron opened the meeting at 8:35 am after a social hour with coffee and baked goods supplied by Victoria Station.

Introductions

Bruce Dexter, new owner of 88 Main Street, discussed the recent renaissance of Putnam as a destination and how that led to his decision to buy the building.  He talked about the various steps that will be taken to renovate the building and how he hopes the projected space will be used.  The Sawyer School is interested in utilizing the upper two floors for classrooms and offices, and the ground level will be good retail and restaurant space.

A question and answer session led to a discussion of safety in the Old Towne area, primarily pedestrians crossing Route 44. The renovation of the LaPointe building contingent to 88 Main was also discussed. Several business owners attested to the reliability of Mr. Dexter and his company and expressed their support for the project.

Finance- PBA ends this year in the black with a balance of $2,000+.

Membership- The membership drive will continue next year.

PBA Mixer- Planning for another mixer will also be underway next year.

Ron thanked all the participants in the Holiday Dazzle Light Parade and Holiday Stroll.

Ron spoke briefly about the January Thaw campaign, consisting of 26 businesses participating in a postcard marketing project.  The businesses will give a discount of 10% to customers with postcard.

Delpha Very’s department will be giving businesses the opportunity to take part in a survey built around the assets and challenges of doing business in Putnam and how Community Development can assist them with those challenges. She is also working on a community wide visionary project to plan for the future of Putnam.

Karen Osbrey invited businesses to take part in the holiday decorating contest and talked briefly about signage in the Town of Putnam.

Ron closed the meeting with a President’s Award, given to Christina Anderson this year for her loyalty and hard work.  He thanked the group for the attendance at the meetings this year and gave holiday greetings at all.

Many thanks to Priscilla Colwell for taking the minutes in my absence this month.  I wish everyone a very happy and blessed holiday season.

Ron opened the meeting at 8:30 a.m. Wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving season.

►Finance- Pumpkin Festival $46.66 deficit, but money still being collected. See financial report.  Barbara Goloski made a motion to approve, Anna Zubkova seconded the motion. Motion carried.

►Pumpkin Festival wrap up. The Commons thought the day was great, North End Flea Market $2,900 to Habitat.  Old Town very positive-Romeo Blackmar a great town crier!

►Train- a big success! More ideas for next year.

Goody bags were a hit.

Rotary park craft fair went well.

Scarecrow festival-positive response.

Trolley was very popular.

Publicity-was good- earlier in 2010

Bands were great.

A great day was had despite the weather.

Signage Program- project for spring, fashioned after the Killingly program.

►Subcommittees:

PR/Marketing- Tony Chabot reported to the group he is working on a map of the area, budgeting and a 2010 marketing program.

Elliot requested the logo for PBA be made into small door signs or decals for business members to display.

Membership:109 members- there will be a combination invoice designed for members for next year. Elliott will look into associate memberships.

► Holiday Stroll- Christina Anderson and Committee are meeting. The stroll is every Friday from Thanksgiving to Christmas. Shops open late till 9:00 p.m.

Meeting this Friday 2:00pm- Victoria Station Café on 11/13/09. Decorating Contest for businesses per section. Willie Bousquet will provide wreaths for the businesses. Karen Snow offered to help decorate businesses. Marie Beecham asked to have a decorating committee for her area of town. Dot Burnworth discussed using art on the sidewalks.

• Holiday Dazzle Light Parade- Danny Goyette is donating a truck.  Banners will hang on the side. Victorian era theme.

Organizing the the townwide clean up in Putnam is part of the Putnam Business Association’s commitment to community improvement with beautification events. The group has established itself as an orgnaization to be both a forum and a promotional vehicle for the town’s business districts. Made up of actively participating business
people from throughout Putnam, equally important to the group are promotional campaigns including unified advertising and other non-partisan means that encourage the growth and success of Putnam as a reginal business center. Their overall goal is to improve the community upon which the businesses depend. In May, the Putnam
Business Association will host a “Putnam in Bloom” Day where members will plant flowers in beds, planters and pots throughout the city.

Volunteers sought for Putnam Clean-up

Volunteers are needed for the First Annual Earth Day Clean-up being organized by the

rejuvenated Putnam Business Association.

The association is seeking commitments from individuals, families, youth groups and civic

organizations for a street and riverside cleanup in Putnam’s downtown area on Saturday, April

25. Volunteers will be assigned to sweep sidewalks and collect trash in several districts,

stretching from Simonzi Park to Providence Street.

Volunteers are asked to bring their own gloves. Brooms, rakes and flat shovels for their personal

use would also be helpful. Trash bags will be provided by the town, and Highway Department

trucks will be positioned along streets to accept the bags.

A pre-cleanup meeting will be held at Rotary Park from 8:45 to 9 am. Following a kickoff speech

by the mayor, volunteers will head to their assignments and return for a noon rally, with prize

drawings and free refreshments provided by local supermarkets and Frito-Lay Inc of Killingly.

Volunteers may request that they be assigned to a specific area, or they may offer to be assigned

to any of the cleanup districts. To RSVP or for information, please call Dot Burnworth, Sawmill

greatly appreciated for organizational purposes..

(Putnam, CT) Everyone considered it a success! The success was not just the

first event held by the Putnam Business Association, but the fact that the group

has been newly revived. The Putnam Business Association (or PBA) has reestablished

itself as an organization to be both a forum and a promotional

vehicle for the town’s business districts. Made up of actively participating

business people from throughout Putnam, the PBA is focusing its efforts on

community improvement with beautification events and policy advocacy. Equally

important to the group are promotional campaigns including unified advertising

and other non-partisan means that encourage the growth and success of Putnam

as a regional business center. The group’s overall goal is to improve the

community upon which the businesses depend.

In mid-March, over 100 people gathered in the grand foyer of the Montgomery

Ward building on Main Street in Putnam for the PBA’s first “membership mixer,”

representing several of Putnam’s businesses. PBA president, Ron Coderre of RPC

Associates, gave a rousing welcome speech beginning with praise for the work of

the event organizing committee, led by Tim Oliver of Gallery by the Falls.

Coderre went on to tell those in attendance, “It is great to see the renewed spirit

in the Putnam business community. We’re looking forward to working together

with local government in continuing to make Putnam a premiere destination to

visit, work and live.” The evening included conversation, music and food. Hors

d’oeuvers were provided by several member-restaurants, including 85 Main, The

Courthouse Bar & Grille, Someplace Special, Palmeieri’s Pizza, Bella’s Gourmet

Market and Victoria Station Cafe. The event was rounded out with the upbeat

music by the bands Uncle Rhubarb and The Hokum Hotshots.

The PBA plans to make this “membership mixer” a quarterly event that will not

only allow members to network and socialize, but also to provide a forum for

non-member businesses to consider membership. According to the membership

committee, businesses located in Putnam are welcome and encouraged to join.

is welcome to participate in community improvement events. Upcoming events

include a town wide clean up in conjunction with Earth Day. The first “Putnam

Beautification Day” will be held on Saturday, April 25th from 9 AM to 1 PM. In

May, the Putnam Business Association will host a “Putnam in Bloom Day” where

flowers will be planted in beds, planters and pots throughout the city.
